Five (not so) Basic Electricity-Saving Tips
You would think following tips on how to save electricity is a pretty easy concept. If that were really the case, don’t you think we’d all save more?
Truth is, a lot of us hear about what to do, but we choose not to do it for whatever reason. Call it a random slip of the mind, or call it laziness. Either way, we tend to forget the basics – and the rules are pretty basic.
Here are five rules on saving electricity that tend to be preached but forgotten. Take notes if you feel it’s a must.
Turn things off when you’re finish: You would think this rule is the easiest of them all. This is the one that really hurts in the end. So many people fall asleep with the television or stereo on. Many forget to turn the front porch light off before going to end. Little things like this will add up to huge numbers when the bill comes.
Unplug machines, beat the vampires: I know this one may seem a little over the top, but it’s important that you get to the vampires before the vampires get to you. Machines such as computers, video games and DVD players are classified as “vampire appliances,” as they practically suck up electricity even when turned off. The best idea is to unplug these machines when you’re not using them.
Don’t be lazy with clothes and dishes: How many times can you say you dried your clothes after a wash, only to have to dry your clothes again because you let them stay in the drier the first time? It happens to all of us. The same story occurs with washing dishes. A better suggestion for dishes is for you to hand-wash them and let them air dry.
Invest in a programmable thermostat: If you work during the day, this could be one of the best investments you’ve ever made. A programmable thermostat will keep your home at a set temperature during the day and another set temperature during the evening, depending on what you desire. These thermostats can reduce heating and cooling bills enough for you to notice a drop in your next statement.
Go green with light bulbs: Energy-efficient light bulbs are becoming the norm more and more. However, there are still many homes who use the old light bulbs rather than switch to the low-watt bulb. These energy-efficient bulbs may cost a couple pennies more, but it’s definitely worth it in the end.
